Midnight Mass is a new horror series coming to Netflix this fall. The show will be directed by Mike Flanagan and stars Thomas Jane, who also co-wrote the script with his wife.
As the frightening season approaches, Netflix is adding more horror to its collection. Their newest scary series, Midnight Mass, has just released a trailer, and it seems like we’ll be getting another eerie smash to add to our collection. Midnight Mass is another dread-filled binge from Netflix and Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor), and if their combined track record is anything to go by, it’ll frighten us the way we want to be terrified.
The next Netflix series will premiere on September 24th, 2024. Mike Flanagan is the director of Midnight Mass, and we get our first look at the series with brand-new footage that comes just in time for Halloween.

Midnight Mass is based on the tale of a tiny, secluded island village. The island village is far from idyllic, and things only become worse when a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) returns and a charismatic priest arrives (HamishLinklater). When Father Paul’s arrival on Crockett Island is accompanied by inexplicable and apparently supernatural occurrences, the community views their new taste as a gift from God. Is there more to the tale, and do these miracles come with a cost?
Kate Siegel, Rahul Abburi, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Alex Essoe, Annarah Cymone, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli, Kristin Lehman, Robert Longstreet, Igby Rigney, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, and Michael Trucco also appear in the seven-episode series. Flanagan and Trevor Macy executive produce the series for Intrepid Pictures.
The teaser demonstrates that Flanagan has a distinct and original approach to presenting horror stories. It also shows that Netflix not only believes in this genre, but also in his storytelling. Flanagan recently had this to say about the upcoming series. “It’s difficult to distinguish the Bible from horror fiction as a book. It has it all; it openly and shamelessly promotes supernatural and terrible occurrences left and right. In the Old Testament, even the story’s hero—God, the epitome of love—drowns the earth when he becomes furious enough.”
Flanagan was reared Catholic and served as an altar boy at his churches on New York’s Governors Island and Maryland’s Bowie. Clearly, his background influenced the plot and setting. “This isn’t just about Catholicism; it’s about the traditions of all of our faiths, particularly those with roots in antiquity,” Flanagan adds. “The old world was a brutal, violent, and frightening place where we had no idea about nature or weather, or if we’d survive the night or the season. And every natural function of the planet might be made to seem as if it were being attacked by a supernatural force.”
What are your thoughts after seeing the new trailer? Is it possible that we’ve got another hit on our hands? Netflix will almost certainly be working on more horror films in the future, based on the last two.
Netflix is one of the hot topics right now.
